Sea Kayak Tortuguero Expedition
A trip to a remote past, to a land of prehistoric turtles and jungle canals. The most important nesting site for Sea Turtles on the Northern Hemisphere
Tour Description

Come to discover and explore this land of canals, tropical rain forest and prehistoric sea turtles. On this trip we will kayak the secondary canals in Tortuguero National Park, patrol the beach at night to see the turtles nesting, we will hike Tortuguero Hill and we will have a taste of the Caribbean culture.

The trip starts with a little paddling initiation, we offer you the option of using sea kayaks or come with a guide on a dough out canoe; there is no excuse to not participate and have a great time in the water.

We start early in San Jose, a bus ride through the Braulio Carrillo National Park, Banana plantations and we arrive to our boat, and off we go to Tortuguero; just getting there by power boat is fantastic.

We visit the Turtle research center, we stay in town, and we do lots of kayaking in the canals, best opportunities to see wild life(monkeys, sloths, iguanas, birds and a long etc.)

We use one night for a night hike on the beach, to spot sea turtles laying their eggs, the best time is July-September, although there is always the chance to see a single arrival.

This is a sea kayak expedition that perfectly combines with hikes, the jungle is stunning.

There are no cars, nor roads in this place, only an intricate webbing of jungle canals and tropical rain forest, and us, sitting comfortably in our kayaks.

This is one of the best family in Costa Rica, perfect for the first time paddler, great for couples or your group of friends. From the comfort of your sea kayak or your dough out canoe you will experience a real wild life adventure.

Enjoy the calm waters and the sounds of the forest; we will take care of the rest.

Other Considerations

On Trail: The trip is mainly on improved trail in reasonable condition. Any portion of the trip not on trail is easy like trail conditions.

Off Trail: Below timberline (about 11,600 feet in Colorado), the trip may involve bushwhacking or travel through forested terrain. Above timberline, the trip may cross open tundra or involve Class 2 hiking under the Yosemite Decimal System: i.e., moving on or around small boulders where the use   of hands may be used, but only to maintain balance. No special hiking or climbing skills are required. Exposure is usually minimal or   nonexistent.

Scrambling: The trip involves Class 3 climbing: i.e., climbing that is relatively easy with plentiful handholds. Although a rope is rarely required, Class 3 climbing may be intimidating for less experienced mountaineers. Always consider bringing  and wearing a climbing helmet to ensure your own safety. A fall on a Class 3 route usually results in a minor injury, but can on occasion   result in serious injury or death.

Semi-technical: The trip involves Class 4 climbing: i.e., within the realm of technical rock climbing, but with relatively plentiful handholds. Some people will desire a rope, but usually just for protection on the descent. Participants must wear climbing helmets. A fall without the protection of a rope on a Class 4 route usually results in serious injury or death.

See more, enjoy more in  our expeditions
